Marriott Bonvoy Rewards

The name Bonvoy is a wink to the French expression spoken all around the world – bon voyage. That means Have a good trip, but the Marriott Bonvoy Rewards program might guarantee that you have a fantastic trip! A quick glance at the Bonvoy group’s properties gives you a shot of wanderlust.

The Marriott Bonvoy Rewards program started in 2019. It used to be the Marriott Rewards program. Now it combines three brand-name hotels into one rewards program.  Bonvoy lets you benefit from Marriott Rewards, The Ritz-Carlton Rewards and Starwood Preferred Guest (SPG).

So what is Marriott Bonvoy? That’s what we’re going to tell you in this article. Ready to collect points and enjoy them? Let’s get started!

Signing up for the Marriott Bonvoy Rewards program

Of course, the first step in any program like this is to register. It is free to join. Once you’ve done that, you can start collecting points at over 7,000 hotels and 2000 private homes in 131 countries. That’s what we call a great offer.

If you are already a member of one of the Ritz Carlton, Marriott, or Starwood programs, you can simply log in to Marriott Bonvoy using your existing membership number and password. If you have more than one account, then you will need to apply to combine your points and nights already accumulated into a new account.

Your card will be accessible virtually in the Marriott Bonvoy mobile app, which you can download from both Google Play and the App Store.

There are two types of points you can earn: classic points or miles depending on your airline. You can change the way you earn your rewards from one stay to the next by contacting customer service. Just remember to mention it to the representative before you arrive at the hotel for check-in.

Each of the three member programs award different amounts of points. The range is 2.5 points per U.S. dollar spent to 10 points for every U.S. dollar spent.

What are the Marriott Bonvoy Rewards member benefits?

There are several levels of membership qualification: Member, Silver Elite, Gold Elite, Platinum Elite, Titanium Elite and Ambassador Elite.

And what are the points used for? To save and enjoy, of course! You can redeem them for overnight stays, cruises, flights, car rentals, but also for experiences like shows or travel activities.

And if you have a high number of points, you can even redeem them for a travel package, which means a trip of seven nights or more.

Doing more with your Marriott Bonvoy Rewards points

You can pool your points or transfer them to someone else. If you’re feeling generous and want to share your points, you can do that too. The minimum per year is 1,000 points and the limit is 100,000 points in a year, so there is still plenty of room for you to give.

A new feature is donating points to Unicef or World Central Kitchen so that your points help people in need.

Getting gift cards with your Marriott Bonvoy Rewards points

If you don’t feel like taking your points to save on travel and want a more practical reward, you can also redeem your points for gift cards. This way, the possibilities are even greater!

In Canada, you can redeem your points for Cuisinart, Burberry, Sony, Samsonite, or Weber products, among others. But the list is so long that members are sure to find something they like!

How can I earn even more Marriott Bonvoy Rewards points?

The Marriott Bonvoy program has partnered with American Express to offer its members the Marriott Bonvoy American Express Card. It helps you earn even more points, on more purchases, even faster.

As a welcome offer, for example, you could earn 65,000 points plus $100 credit. You get both when, as a new cardmember, you spend $1500 in the first three months.

Also, if you want a little help choosing your credit card, the Hardbacon credit card comparison tool can be very helpful!

It is also possible to earn points by hosting events at one of the participating hotels. This can be a great option, as members can earn up to 60,000 points per event, with two points for every US dollar spent on venue, catering and audio visual needs.

Titanium Elite members can earn up to 105,000 points per event. There are also 20,000 airline miles and free nights that you can earn in lieu of points.

If you’ve read everything so far, one of your main questions might be “How many points do I need to redeem to book a free stay?” Well, here’s the answer!

The number of points required is different from reservation to reservation, so to find out the exact amount, go to or the Marriott Bonvoy app. Once on that site, you’ll be able to see how many points are required for a redemption and start enjoying it!

To see how many points you’ll need to have to earn a reward, you’ll need to go to the site and you can search for a reward by number of points, by brand – there are hundreds! – or by item number. For example, you feed a rescued puppy for 2,500 points! For 400,000 you can get a Jilco Diamonds by the Yard necklace. Of course, you have nine shopping categories to choose from.

Can Marriott Bonvoy Rewards points expire?

Members must remain active to keep them, which means making at least one transaction, earning points or miles or redeeming points at least once every two years.

There is an exception for Lifetime Elite status, where points have no expiration date. Now all you have to do is plan your next getaway to start earning points!
